How to choose between a full-service marketing agency and freelancers

By Miguel Rivero, CEO de Ikusa Media · Updated

In short

Several freelancers can work well if you have someone in-house with the time and judgment to direct them. A full-service (360°) marketing agency makes sense when you want strategy, branding, content, ads, web and photo/video handled by one team under one direction, so your brand looks the same on every channel and you don't have to coordinate each vendor. The key is who directs the work, not just who executes it.

The cost that doesn't show up on the invoice

Hiring a designer, a photographer, a social media manager and an ads specialist separately looks cheaper. On the invoice, it often is. What doesn't show up is the time you spend coordinating them, explaining your brand to each one and fixing pieces that don't fit together.

When nobody's directing, each vendor optimizes their own piece: the designer makes nice graphics, the ads person chases clicks, the photographer delivers photos. Nobody owns the overall result.

When freelancers make sense

In those cases, a good specialist freelancer may be exactly what you need.

  • You have an in-house marketing lead with time to direct and review.
  • You need a one-off, well-defined task: a photo shoot, a redesign of one piece.
  • Your brand already has guidelines and a strategy, and you only need execution.

When a full-service agency makes sense

The advantage isn't “more services.” It's that one strategy guides every piece. The photographer knows which ad will come out of the shoot, and the ads specialist knows what the website promises.

  • Nobody in-house is directing marketing.
  • Your brand looks different on Instagram, on your website and in your store.
  • You spend on ads but nobody connects the results to the content or the website.
  • You want one point of contact accountable for everything.

A social media agency is not a full-service agency

Many agencies call themselves full-service but only post on social media and outsource the rest. A 360° marketing company works on the whole business: it studies the market, defines the brand and coordinates advertising, content, web, photo/video and automation with in-house teams or clearly directed partners.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Do you study my competitors before proposing, or do you offer a fixed package?
  • Which work does your team do and which do you outsource?
  • Who is my point of contact, and how many accounts do they handle?
  • How do I approve content before it goes live?
  • What do you measure each month, and who walks me through it?
  • Will ad accounts, the website and source files be in my name?
  • What timelines do you work with for each deliverable?

Red flags, agency or freelancer

Some behaviors are worth spotting before you sign, no matter who sends the proposal:

  • They quote a fixed price without asking anything about your business.
  • They promise guaranteed results, like a set number of followers or sales.
  • They create ad accounts or the domain in their name instead of yours.
  • They can't show real work or explain what they did on each project.
  • There's no content calendar or approval process before posting.
  • Reports only talk about reach and likes, never leads or sales.

How we work at Ikusa Media

Ikusa Media is a 360° marketing company with teams in Lechería (Venezuela), Barcelona (Spain) and Atlanta (USA). Before proposing anything we study your competitors; if you don't have brand guidelines, we start there. An account manager coordinates strategy, design, photo and video, development and ads, and every month we report what worked and what we changed.

Our reference timelines: branding in 15 to 20 business days, websites in 2 to 4 weeks, first content in 5 to 7 business days, and social media plans with a three-month minimum, because one month isn't enough to see results. You can see our social media and content service and the rest of our services on the site.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most before starting. Still have a question? Message us on WhatsApp.

Is a full-service agency more expensive than freelancers?

On the invoice it may or may not be, depending on scope. What matters is also counting coordination time and the cost of an inconsistent brand.

Can I hire a full-service agency for just one service?

Yes. Many clients start with one service, like branding or a WhatsApp assistant, and add others as they need them.

Why do social media plans have a three-month minimum?

Because one month isn't enough time to get to know the brand, see what works and adjust. Three months is.

What does an account manager do?

They know your brand, coordinate the team and are your main contact for approvals, change requests and results reviews.
