Product photography that sells on Instagram: how to plan it

By Miguel Rivero, CEO de Ikusa Media · Updated

In short

Product photography that sells on Instagram shows clearly what the product is, how it's used and why it's worth the price, with lighting and style consistent with the brand. It's planned before the shoot: which shots you need for the feed, Stories, Reels and ads, in which vertical format, and with which backgrounds and props. A professional shoot pays off when the photos have to carry paid advertising and your brand's perceived quality.

Why photos carry so much weight on Instagram

On Instagram, people decide in seconds whether to stop or keep scrolling. They can't touch or try your product: the photo is all they have. A dark or confusing image says exactly that about your business, even if the product is excellent.

The same photos usually end up in ads, the online store and the catalog. A good shoot works for several channels at once.

The shot types you need

  • Isolated product: clean background, sharp detail. For the store, catalog and ads.
  • Detail: texture, materials, finishes. What justifies the price.
  • In use or in context: the product in someone's hands, on a table, in a real space.
  • Scale: a reference so people understand the size.
  • Variants: colors, sizes or versions, with the same light and framing.
  • Short video: the product in motion for Reels, Stories and ads.

Format: think vertical

Instagram is a vertical platform. Feed posts perform better in vertical formats like 4:5 or 3:4, and Reels and Stories use 9:16. If you shoot only horizontally, you'll end up cropping the product. Plan shots with room around the product so each image can be adapted to every format, and check current dimensions before the shoot, because Instagram adjusts them over time.

Lighting, backgrounds and brand consistency

Lighting defines perceived quality. Controlled studio light shows the product's true color and avoids harsh shadows; natural light works well for lifestyle shots if you know how to handle it.

Backgrounds, colors and props should come from your brand guidelines. That way, when someone sees one of your photos in the feed, they recognize it before reading the name. If you don't have guidelines, it's worth defining at least a palette and a photo style before the shoot.

How to prepare for a shoot

  • Define where the photos will be used: feed, ads, store, packaging, billboards.
  • Make a shot list per product and per format.
  • Put together a moodboard with references for light, backgrounds and framing.
  • Prep the products: clean, no damaged labels, in every variant.
  • Decide whether there will be models, hands or locations, and get the permissions.

When to hire a professional shoot

Phone photos are fine for everyday posts and spontaneous Stories. A professional shoot pays off when you're about to invest in ads, launch an online store or refresh your brand: that's when the image has to live up to what you're paying to show it.

Mistakes that cheapen your product

Many photos fail because of details that are fixed with planning, not more gear:

  • Colors that don't match the real product, which leads to returns and distrust.
  • Busy backgrounds that compete with the product.
  • Different lighting and style in every photo, which makes the feed look messy.
  • Dust, fingerprints or crooked labels that show when someone zooms in.
  • Heavy filters that change texture and color.
  • Text over the photo that hides the product or can't be read on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most before starting. Still have a question? Message us on WhatsApp.

What photo format is best for Instagram?

For the feed, vertical formats like 4:5 or 3:4; for Reels and Stories, 9:16. Check current dimensions, since Instagram adjusts them.

Are phone photos good enough?

For everyday posts and Stories, yes. For ads, an online store or a new brand, a professional shoot shows product quality much better.

White background or styled backgrounds?

Both. Clean backgrounds work for the store and catalog; in-context shots connect better on social and in ads.

Does Ikusa Media also shoot product video?

Yes. We produce corporate video, Reels, drone footage and motion graphics with our own equipment.
